Multicam History
The still camera array is actually the precursor to the motion
picture camera. During the late 19th century, there was a controversy over whether or not
all four of a horses feet left the ground when it galloped. To settle the matter, in 1872
Eadweard Muybridge http://www.linder.com/muybridge/muybridge.html assembled
an array of 12 glass plate cameras triggered by strings which the horses hooves hit. He was
able to show that all four feet did leave the ground, and settle the matter.
Muybridge went on to do extensive motion studies, and is now considered one of the fathers
of moving pictures. He was honored recently by the United States Postal Service with a
stamp in his honor.
